I haven't posted in about a week, it's been a crazy week at work, as usual but also I've been totally overwhelmed by the election and how fantastic it turned out. I still see headlines that make me feel like I must be dreaming. But I'm not, it's real. Brooklyn was amazing on Tuesday night. As the states started turning blue we heard cries and shouts from the streets and the apartments and frantically channel surfed looking for confirmation that this was really happening. It was an incredible night. I was with my best friends and we were hugging and holding hands as we watched the acceptance speech. I almost lost it when he talked about the puppy. Goddamn. Then we hit the streets where Park Slopers were high-fiving each other in the streets, hugging strangers and chanting out, "Yes We Can." Crap, I'm tearing up just thinking about this. It's one of those moments that's so big that you know you can't really understand how big it is. You just need to be in it. We ended up at the local bar, which had to lock it's doors because it was filled to capacity. It was a gorgeous night and even the hangover wasn't that bad.
I have to say though, I was happy the next day to see New Yorkers back to being New Yorkers - I had to run out of the office to do a quick scout in the city and was taking pictures of a building near central park. A man on a bike in the street almost got cut off by a taxi and yelled, "Fuck you! You fucking fuck!" I was taking pictures of a buliding from across the street, standing in front of a bunch of hot dog vendors and trucks. The drivers leaned out and started cat calling me as I was taking the pictures, "Hey baby, you want me to take your picture? Hey, take a picture of me! Hey! Heeeeeyyy!!!" Needless to say I finished me scout and scuttled to the nearest subway back to work, where things were much more civilized - champagne to celebrate a colleague's birthday and the election results.
The weirdest thing happened Sunday night - I woke up at around 2:30 and heard a noise in my studio apartment that sounded like someone was turning a key in my door. I totally freaked out and ran over to the door but couldn't see anyone out of the peephole and the lock wasn't moving. I figured I must have been hallucinating so I went back to bed - then the same thing happens like 30 minutes later. And it sounds exactly like a key turning in a lock, which, especially since I'm on the ground floor, was super super scary. My first thought was: It's the bugs. I don't know how, but it's the bugs. I'm being haunted by the ghosts of bugs past. In my mind I did a mental tally of how many bugs I have killed since all this began whether by shoe or broom or magazine slapping, or poison... I figured roughly 700 billion. OK, that's totally enough bug ghosts to make a ghost key in lock sound. AND given that these bugs are assholes, it is TOTALLY something they would do....
To the bugs in my apartment: Screw you guys. Seriously. I don't know what your recent surge in numbers is about, if it's a right wing reaction to the exterminator coming tomorrow or what but it's not going to work. You're about to be sprayed with some really bad shit. I hope they send me a really bad ass exterminator too - one who's maybe a little bit crazy and a little trigger happy with the chemicals. I'm thinking Mel Gibson as he was in Lethal Weapon. A little suicidal, a little loose cannon...
